About the Digital Archives

The most visible part of the Digital Archives is the internet site, which serves as an entry point into archive material. However, there are a number of groups working behind the scenes whose primary goal is making source material available.

Director of Archive Accessibility, Anette Skogseth Clausen, has overall responsibility for the Digital Archives.

The Digital Archives are created and maintained by several groups within the National Archives, each having different roles:

Editorial

The editorial staff are located at the regional archives in Bergen, and main offices in Oslo. They maintain the webpage content, offer guidance to users, as well as maintaining contact with users through channels such as telephone, e-mail and discussion forums.

Registration

Registration of sources for the Digital Archives is performed at two locations. The regional archives in Bergen and Stavanger, though this work was previously performed in Voss as well. The registration groups deal with transcription of a variety of archive materials. The registration groups were responsible for, amongst other things, the transcription of national censuses from 1865,1900 and 1910

Scanning

Scanning of documents at the National Archives is performed, for the most part, at the main offices in Oslo. All bulk scanning is performed there, such as scanning of church book microfilms, pledge books and court journals etc. When the material has been scanned, it is indexed and published through the internet site.

Development

Development of new functionality is carried out by the "Archive and IT-development" department, based primarily in the main offices in Oslo.
